In North Alabama the weather on the day matters more than the month on the calendar. Here is how humidity, heat, rain and temperature affect an exterior paint job, and how to plan around them.

Spring and fall are the easiest windows

Spring and fall bring the combination exterior paint likes best: moderate temperatures, lower humidity and fewer afternoon storms. Surfaces dry predictably, the paint levels out as it cures and crews can work a full day. It is also when most homeowners want exteriors done, so those months fill up first.

Check the temperature on the label

Every exterior paint has a minimum and maximum application temperature printed on the can. Paint applied below the minimum may not cure properly, and paint applied in very hot conditions can dry too quickly, leaving lap marks and a weak bond. Also remember it is the surface temperature that counts, not just the air. A south wall in full afternoon sun can be much hotter than the forecast says.

Alabama humidity and morning dew

Humidity is the part of Alabama weather that surprises people. Even on a clear day, siding and trim can hold moisture from overnight dew. Painting over a damp surface traps that moisture under the paint, and it can later blister and peel. We start once the surface has dried, and we plan the day so fresh paint is not still wet when the evening dew arrives. That is why a good exterior crew does not start at sunrise on every wall.

Rain and storms

Fresh paint needs time to set before it gets wet. We watch the forecast and will move a day rather than risk a washed-out finish. Short afternoon storms are common in summer, which means planning the order of work so the sides that dry first get painted first.

Summer

You can paint in summer, but the work has to follow the shade around the house. Painting a wall in direct, hot sun is a common reason paint dries too fast. A good crew starts on the shaded side and moves around with the sun, which sometimes makes summer jobs a little slower but just as durable.

Winter

North Alabama winters are mild, but cold nights and damp mornings shorten the usable window to a few hours in the middle of the day. Some days work; many do not. If you want an exterior painted in winter, expect more schedule flexibility from us and more weather-related delays.

What happens before the paint

Weather is only half of it. A good exterior job starts with washing the house and letting it dry fully, scraping loose paint, repairing soft wood, caulking gaps and priming bare spots. Those steps take time and need dry conditions too. A schedule that only counts painting days will be wrong.

Pick a month, then book early

If you have a month in mind, book your estimate a few weeks ahead. We walk the exterior, note repairs and give you a written estimate. We then schedule around the forecast, not just the calendar.
