How to Choose Interior Paint Colors and Finishes
Simple steps for picking paint colors and the right sheen for each room in your home.
Choosing paint is easier when you break it into two decisions: the color, and the finish.
Picking a color
- Test in your own light. Put large samples on two walls and look at them morning, afternoon and evening.
- Consider what stays. Floors, counters and cabinets have undertones that your wall color has to work with.
- Keep flow in mind. In open floor plans, choose colors that work together from room to room.
Picking a finish
- Flat or matte: hides wall flaws, best for low-traffic rooms and ceilings.
- Eggshell or satin: a good everyday choice that wipes clean in living areas and hallways.
- Semi-gloss: durable and easy to scrub, common for trim, doors and cabinets.
