Two cabinet painting estimates can be far apart for good reasons. Here is what actually decides the number, and how to compare quotes so you are comparing the same job.
Start with the number of doors and drawers
Cabinets are measured by the piece, not by the square foot of the kitchen. Every door and drawer front is removed, labeled, cleaned, sanded, primed and finished on its own, and every frame is prepped and painted in place. A kitchen with an island, a pantry wall and a bank of upper cabinets has far more pieces than a small galley kitchen, even if the rooms look similar in size. That is why a good estimate lists the number of doors, drawers and frames in writing. If a quote does not, ask for the count.
The condition of the cabinets matters as much as the size
Solid cabinets in good shape are the easy case. Cabinets with deep dings, worn edges, old peeling finish, loose face frames or swelling near the sink need repair before any paint goes on, and repair takes time. Painting over damage does not hide it; the new finish shows every flaw. We look at the condition during the estimate and tell you what needs fixing and what does not.
The material the cabinets are made of
Solid wood and MDF are the best candidates for painting. Laminate and thermofoil are different. They need a different primer and more care, and some are not good candidates at all. We check the material in person before we recommend painting, because a finish that peels in a year is worse than not painting at all.
The finish and how many coats
A cabinet finish is not wall paint. Cabinets get opened hundreds of times, wiped down and splashed, so they need a finish that cures hard and cleans easily. That finish goes on in thin, even coats with proper drying time between them. A job that skips coats or rushes the cure will look fine for a few weeks and then chip at the edges.
Spraying or brushing
Spraying doors and drawer fronts gives the smoothest result with no brush marks. It also means more setup: floors, counters, appliances and nearby surfaces must be masked and protected, and there is a place to spray and let the pieces dry. Frames that stay on the wall are usually brushed and rolled. The best jobs use both methods in the right places.
Prep is where quality hides
Cleaning and degreasing, sanding and priming are the least visible steps and the most important. Kitchen cabinets collect cooking residue you cannot see. If it is not removed, paint will not stick to it. If one estimate seems to skip these steps, that is usually why it looks different from the others.
Painting or replacing?
If your cabinet boxes are sound and you like your layout, painting changes the whole look of the kitchen in days instead of the weeks that replacement takes, and nothing gets torn out. If your layout is the problem, painting cannot fix it, and we will tell you so at the estimate.
How to compare cabinet painting estimates
Ask each painter these questions and compare the answers, not just the totals:
- Do the doors and drawers come off, and are they labeled?
- What primer and what finish do you use?
- How many coats does each piece get?
- Do you spray, brush or both?
- How long is the cure time before the cabinets go back into normal use?
- Is the number of doors and drawers listed in the estimate?
- What is protected while you work, and who cleans up?
